Gold Coast Timber Restoration

Before You Spend Thousands On Your Deck — Make Sure You're Choosing The Right Finish.

The biggest mistake homeowners make isn't hiring the wrong tradesperson — it's picking the wrong coating. Nobody ever explains the difference between oil, water-based oil, stain and paint. We do, before we touch your deck.

Our Method

We Ask Before We Recommend.

Not the other way around.

1
What appearance do you want?
2
How much timber grain do you want visible?
3
How often are you happy to maintain it?
4
What's your budget — today and over 10 years?
5
What condition is the timber in right now?
6
How much direct sun does the deck get?
7
Pool, pets or kids using the deck?

Only then do we tell you what we'd actually do.

Why We Show You This

We could sell you Traditional Oil all day. It needs the most recoats — which means the most revenue for us, year after year.

We show you the real 10-year numbers instead, for all four systems, side by side. Our job isn't to recommend whatever's best for our business. It's to give you the facts and the math, and let you choose what's actually best for your deck, your budget and your life.

That's the whole point of the calculator above.

Why Prep Changes Everything

Why We Invested In German Engineering

Most restorers use a standard orbital sander. We use a Terrassen Blitz brush-sanding system from Germany — and it changes the entire result.

Traditional Orbital Sanders
– Leave low spots and uneven patches
– Take longer to cover the same deck
– Need every proud nail punched first
– Strip coatings unevenly
The Terrassen Blitz Brush System
+ Follows the natural contour of each board
+ Works cleanly around fasteners sitting slightly proud
+ Strips old coatings evenly, right back to healthy fibre
+ Faster, with a smoother, more consistent finish
The Real Lesson

Most Deck Problems Aren't Product Problems.
They're Preparation Problems.

90%
Preparation
10%
Coating

The best coating in the world fails on badly prepped timber. Sanding, cleaning and pH-balancing the wood is what makes any finish — oil, stain or paint — actually last the years we quote you.

Common Questions

Straight Answers.

Are these "proper oils," or something synthetic?+

It depends on the system. Traditional Oil is a classic solvent-based penetrating oil. Water-Based Oil uses the same oil-look binder, but water instead of solvent as the carrier — lower odour, easier cleanup, still penetrates the timber. Natural Stain simply carries more pigment for longer colour life. We'll tell you honestly which is which for your deck.

Which finish actually lasts the longest?+

Roughly: Deck Paint, then Natural Stain, then Water-Based Oil, then Traditional Oil. More pigment and film-build generally means better UV blocking and a longer gap between maintenance coats — see the comparison chart above for exact numbers.

Will the coating peel over time?+

Applied correctly on properly prepared timber, these systems wear down gradually rather than peeling like old varnishes. When the colour dulls, a clean and a refresh coat brings it back — no full strip needed.

Why sand back to bare timber instead of coating over the old finish?+

It's the only way to get a genuinely new, evenly-absorbing surface. Coating over old, degraded finish traps the problem underneath and shortens the life of the new coat. Our German brush-sanding system makes a full strip-back fast enough that it's rarely worth skipping.

How long does the whole process take?+

Most residential decks are done in 1–2 days, depending on size, timber condition and weather.

Is it safe for kids, pets and plants?+

Our water-based systems are low-VOC and safe once cured. If you choose Traditional Oil (solvent-based), we'll walk you through ventilation and cure time before pets and kids go back on the deck.

Do you guarantee the work?+

We complete the agreed preparation and coating process with due care and skill. If a genuine workmanship issue is identified, we will assess it fairly and address it in accordance with Australian Consumer Law..

How often will I actually need to maintain my deck after this?+

Anywhere from every 12 months to every 5 years — purely depending on which finish you choose. That's the whole point of the comparison above. We'll also remind you when it's due.
